Notable personal detailsDiana Louise DeGette is an American lawyer and politician who has represented Colorado’s 1st Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives since 1997. Before Congress, she served in the Colorado House of Representatives (1992–1996) and worked as a lawyer, including with the Colorado State Public Defender’s Office. She earned a B.A. from Colorado College (1979) and a J.D. from New York University School of Law (1982).
The candidate opposes large Republican tax cuts and supports progressive economic priorities aimed at benefiting working families and expanding social programs. She has criticized the 2017 GOP tax law as a giveaway to the wealthy and aligns with the Congressional Progressive Caucus on economic and Build Back Better priorities.
Supports expanding access to health care through strengthening the Affordable Care Act, protecting and expanding Medicaid-related programs, increasing funding for medical research and preventive care, and expanding telehealth and other access measures. Advocates government action to lower costs and preserve coverage rather than full privatization or repeal.
Supports protections for migrants and Dreamers, expanded legal relief and pathways to permanent residency, and limits on immigration enforcement practices that risk privacy or family separation. Has sponsored and cosponsored legislation and sent letters urging humanitarian treatment and federal support for migrants in her district.

Supports federal restrictions on high-capacity magazines and other gun-safety measures and is an active member of congressional efforts to reduce gun violence. Has sponsored and reintroduced legislation to ban high-capacity gun magazines and participates in the House Gun Violence Prevention Task Force.
