Notable personal detailsWilliam Morgan "Bill" Cassidy is an American physician and politician who has served as the senior U.S. senator from Louisiana since 2015. A gastroenterologist, he previously represented Louisiana’s 6th congressional district in the U.S. House (2009–2015) and served in the Louisiana State Senate (2006–2009). He earned a B.S. and an M.D. from Louisiana State University. He has chaired the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee since 2025.
Supports tax cuts and lower tax rates for individuals and businesses, including backing the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act and opposing new taxes such as a carbon tax.
Opposes single-payer/Medicare for All and supports market-oriented reforms to the health system, including repeal or replacement of large parts of the Affordable Care Act. Focuses on expanding access to digital health and targeted Medicare reforms (cost reductions and access in Medicare/Medicare Advantage) rather than creating a universal government-run program. Uses legislation and bipartisan initiatives to adjust program rules and reduce patient costs while preserving private insurance options.
Supports stronger border enforcement and expanded physical barriers while backing stricter immigration enforcement measures (e.g., detention and removal of certain unauthorized entrants) and reforms to limit executive parole and increase transparency about migrants released at the border. Sponsors and co-sponsors legislation to expand border-wall construction and to tighten parole and detention practices. Advocates faster removals and greater reporting/transparency of catch-and-release data.
Supports significant limits on abortion access, including bans on mail-order/chemical abortions and restrictions after fetal pain/20 weeks, while promoting informed-consent and conscience protections for medical providers. Advocates federal and state measures to restrict certain abortion methods and require in-person care and ultrasound information prior to abortions.
Supports expanded domestic fossil fuel production and offshore leasing, seeks permitting reform to lower energy costs, and opposes carbon taxes and EPA regulations that would force generation shifts away from fossil fuels. Advocates for government actions to boost U.S. energy production and competitiveness while favoring market-oriented measures and targeted clean-energy investments rather than aggressive emissions mandates.
Supports Second Amendment rights and has sponsored legislation to expand gun purchase options and limit state-level restrictions; opposes broad bans on firearms and certain federal regulations. Has also supported targeted measures with due process—such as incentives for state red‑flag/crisis intervention laws and protections in that legislation.
Bill Cassidy is facing a crowded and increasingly combative Louisiana Republican Senate primary, with Rep. Julia Letlow and State Treasurer John Fleming actively campaigning against him and trading attacks over who is “most conservative.” Letlow has also come under scrutiny for failing to timely report hundreds of stock trades under the STOCK Act, an issue now surfacing in the race against Cassidy. Separately, the expiration of enhanced Affordable Care Act premium credits is driving higher insurance costs and could become a campaign issue in Cassidy’s Senate contest.
